Danny Kanell didn’t hold back on Sunday, taking AP Top 25 voters to task after LSU remained ranked despite a 35-34 overtime loss to Kentucky.
Lane Kiffin‘s team, which entered the weekend at No. 10, plummeted to No. 22 after the loss. But that wasn’t enough for Kanell.
“The AP Top 25 never disappoints. It always has its stupidity on full display!!!” he said on X. “The ONLY reason LSU and Oregon are ranked is because of preseason expectations. Even (though) the voters are specifically mandated not to do that. SMH.”
While LSU, not Oregon, is still ranked after Week 6, the Ducks still received the second-most votes among unranked teams after a drab 17-15 loss to UCLA. The Bruins moved to No. 12 after their victory.
But Kanell is right about the expectations LSU faced heading into the season. The Tigers were expected to be a contender for a College Football Playoff spot in Kiffin’s first season in Baton Rouge. With games against Texas and Alabama still on the docket, they’re not out of the running yet. But losses like the one to the Wildcats won’t help.
Meanwhile, Oregon is 3-2, with Ohio State as its toughest remaining opponent. The Ducks have a little more work to do if they want to make a third straight Playoff appearance.
