Despite some early struggles, the 20th-ranked Texas Longhorns have managed to keep themselves afloat in a crowded SEC title picture heading into this weekend’s pivotal matchup against No. 9 Vanderbilt.
Star quarterback Arch Manning has also quietly been finding his way after taking some early lumps, with last Saturday’s 352-yard, 4-touchdown performance against Mississippi State marking his best statistical performance yet against SEC competition.
Manning’s stellar performance against the Bulldogs helped will Texas to a massive comeback victory in Starkville, a performance that CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell says could be the “pivot point” for the highly touted gunslinger.
“I think that game, for Arch Manning, could be a pivot point for his entire career,” Kanell said on a recent episode of the Cover 3 podcast. “I do think that there are some games where you look at, and it’s like the first time you did something special.
“Now granted, I thought that maybe that was going to be the Oklahoma game, but then he had the Kentucky setback. Does it mean that he’s going to be flawless from here on out? No, but I do think that it goes a long way to a lot of the critics, a lot of the naysayers, a lot of the people that said he was overrated, and I think even more so within his own locker room and coaching staff.”
Texas trailed Mississippi State 38-21 with 12:29 remaining in the Week 9 matchup. The Longhorns scored the game’s final 24 points to win in overtime. Manning will look to keep the momentum going against Vandy, with kickoff set for noon ET on ABC.
