The Denver Broncos quarterback competition came to an end on Wednesday morning as coach Vic Fangio told the team that Teddy Bridgewater would be the starter as he beat out former Mizzou star Drew Lock.
This is nothing new for the Broncos, as it’s the fifth time in 5 years the Broncos will have a new starting quarterback in the season opener. It appeared to be a close race throughout as Lock, who was the incumbent, showed improvement this preseason.
The Denver Channel’s Troy Renck reported that Bridgewater, who was acquired from the Panthers in April, claimed the top spot with his strong performance against the Seattle Seahawks, which included 5 defensive starters.
The 28-year-old completed 9 of 11 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown. Two things stuck out about the performance: he converted a fourth-and-5 dig route to Jerry Jeudy that showed patience, and he engineered a 16-play touchdown drive featuring dinks, dunks and touch on a 21-yard pass to tight end Eric Saubert.
Lock also lost 2 fumbles during the Seattle game, but also engineered 2 scoring drives.
