Departed Alabama assistant receives National Recruiter of the Year honor for 2021 class

Alabama’s coaching staff had significant turnover since the regular season, but one of those departed assistants has picked up a national honor from 247Sports.
New Marshall head coach Charles Huff was named the 247Sports’ National Recruiter of the Year as he helped Alabama reel in the No. 1 class, and best ever, as the associate head coach and running backs coach for the Crimson Tide.
Huff, who previously coached at Penn State, Western Michigan, the Buffalo Bills and Vanderbilt, deflected the praise that came with the award.
Alabama’s 2021 recruiting class is officially the highest-rated class in modern recruiting history, according to both 247Sports and Rivals. The addition of 5-star running back Camar Wheaton officially clinched the record. Wheaton committed to Alabama on Dec. 23 but didn’t sign until earlier this morning. Alabama’s 2021 class now includes a staggering seven 5-star prospects, per 247Sports Composite rankings.
“It’s a good honor but I think it says a lot about the Alabama football program and the infrastructure there,” Huff told 247Sports. “When you become Recruiter Of The Year obviously you didn’t do it by yourself and there are a lot of people that worked behind the scenes and a lot of coaches that had a hand in that as well. I think it speaks for the organizational infrastructure that Coach (Nick) Saban put in place. Obviously the expectation he set on each position coach and each area coach to be diligent in recruiting and know as much about the kid and the parents and the kid’s support system as possible. And I think it’s a little bit about being intentional in building relationships.”
Huff is Alabama’s first National Recruiter of the Year since Mario Cristobal, now the head coach at Oregon, won it in 2015.
