One interesting detail in Auburn DC Kevin Steele’s new contract is that it wasn’t signed until Oct. 17, which happened to be four days after the Tigers’ loss to Tennessee and before the win over Ole Miss.
That part was reported by Brandon Marcello of Auburn 247, and he also added the contract was “recommended” by Gus Malzahn and athletics director Allen Greene. Malzahn and Greene each signed the contract, along with Steven Leath.
Steele’s promotion also lifted him to being paid $2.05 million this season, which puts him at the same level of Dave Aranda of LSU and Brent Venables of Clemson, who both also earn at least $2 million.
Steele was to earn $1.3 million in base salary this season under his previous agreement, which was up $100,000 from last year. Bonuses of $102,500 were also available, AL.com reported. That made him the nation’s seventh-highest paid college assistant, according to USA Today’s coaching salary database.
Steele’s deal also comes after head coach Gus Malzahn in December agreed to a new seven-year, $49 million contract.
New contract for Auburn def coordinator Kevin Steele shows he is being paid $2.05 million this season, including $250K retention.
He joins LSU's Dave Aranda, Clemson's Brent Venbles at $2M+ this season.
