Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy is expected to re-enter the transfer portal this offseason after spending 1 season with the Blue Devils, according to a report.
That news was first shared by ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Tuesday morning. Murphy previously transferred to Duke after beginning his collegiate career at Texas.
As Thamel noted, Murphy had a fantastic season in his lone year in Durham. He threw for over 2,900 yards and set a new program record for touchdown passes in a single season with 26.
Murphy also led Duke to a 9-3 record in Year 1 under coach Manny Diaz. The Blue Devils were one of the most surprising teams in the country this season.
Murphy initially signed with Texas as a 4-star prospect in the class of 2022. He served as Quinn Ewers’ primary backup in 2023. He did take a redshirt year during his time in Austin, so Murphy will still have 2 years of eligibility remaining at his next destination.
Duke is seemingly working quickly to find a new quarterback for next season. In a separate report, Thamel noted that Duke is hosting Tulane quarterback Darian Mensah on a recruiting visit on Tuesday. Mensah is, so far, one of the top quarterbacks to enter the transfer portal so far this offseason.
The Blue Devils will face Ole Miss in the Gator Bowl as they pursue a 10-win season.
