One of the most celebrated franchises in sports gaming history made its long-awaited return a couple of years ago when EA Sports finally brought back the beloved College Football franchise after an 11-year hiatus.

Now in its third iteration since returning, sales have already begun to decline because of questionable development decisions EA made in the latest version, which was released several months ago.

It doesn’t look like things are expected to improve any time soon either, with Mike Straw from Insider Gaming reporting on Tuesday that there is “concern” in the industry about the franchise’s long-term future and financial viability.

Per Straw, multiple sources that have been involved in the development of the game, including 2 that he considers to be “high-level,” expressed worry to him that the game could end up going away again within the next 5 years.

According to the report, the developers who spoke to Shaw cited rising development costs and declining sales, with NIL payouts to the individual players who agreed to be in the game being mentioned as a major factor.

If the game does end up disappearing from shelves once again, then it will be a massive blow to the generations of fans who waited for over a decade to finally see the iconic franchise return.
