Edward Aschoff may be gone but his memory will continue to live on inside the headquarters of the Southeastern Conference for many years to come.

There’s no doubt the tragic passing of Aschoff in December touched many around the SEC and the loss of the reporter is still being felt as we inch closer to the 2020 season.

In tribute to Aschoff, the SEC has announced it will honor the late reporter with the formation of a new internship called the Edward Aschoff SEC Digital Communications Intern position.

Aschoff, a native of Oxford and a Florida graduate, covered the league for over a decade and began his career at ESPN back in 2011.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey issued the following statement on the formation of the Edward Aschoff SEC Digital Communications Intern position.

“We are pleased to be able to remember Edward Aschoff in an important way that will reflect his priorities of sharing knowledge and developing connections with the next generation of communications professionals. We will long remember Ed for his infectious smile and his tireless work ethic, for being a superior journalist but an even better person. My thanks go to his fiancee’ Katy Berteau and his family for sharing Ed with us and allowing us to remember him in a significant way.”

Rob King, ESPN senior vice president, also issued a statement following the news.

“We’re honored the SEC chose this wonderful way to honor Edward’s legacy. Our profound sorrow over Ed’s sudden passing is constantly soothed by memories of his intellect, talent and generosity. This internship gives those who knew and cared for Ed further comfort that the significance of his life will never be forgotten. He was deeply invested in the future of the industry, and passionate about sharing his experiences with the next generation of sports professionals. We’re so grateful.”
