Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz is in the running for SEC Coach of the Year as the Tigers are off to a 5-3 start this season, including last week’s last-second win over Arkansas.

On the SEC coaches media teleconference, Drinkwitz explained how the Tigers built a culture during a season when normal interactions were changed, and there were increased protocols surrounding COVID-19.

“Anytime you block one-on-one interactions and being able to go through difficult things, whether it be the fourth quarter series that you do in the offseason or spring practices or summer workouts that we weren’t able to be around, I think it always causes it a little bit longer to take hold,” Drinkwitz said. “You know, and then if you haven’t, as a coaching staff, been able to have the same interaction we would normally have with our players just due to the COVID restrictions and not trying to interact with families or people outside of your bubble but we’re doing the very best we can and and you know our kids have been really resilient and had an open heart to everything we’ve tried which is more of a tribute to them than anything else.”

Mizzou this week will take on QB JT Daniels and Georgia.

“He has natural feel for the position… he does a nice job with pre-snap indicators,” Drinkwitz said. “He handles their RPO scheme well, which is mostly pre-snap.”

Drinkwitz was also asked about Georgia DL Jordan Davis, who has missed time with an elbow injury lately.

“When you play in the SEC, every team we play has an outstanding defensive lineman, so we will adjust accordingly,” he said.
