Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz offered a congratulatory tribute to former Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, who announced his retirement on Monday.

Malzahn had been Florida State’s offensive coordinator in 2025. While the Noles fell well short of expectations overall, Malzahn’s offense produced 6.7 yards per play, which ranked 13th nationally this season.

Malzahn has been one of the sport’s most-respected coaches for the last couple of decades. Part of his legacy is hiring successful coaches such as Drinkwitz early in their careers. Drinkwitz worked for Malzahn as a quality control coach at Auburn in 2010-11 and then again as running backs coach at Arkansas State in 2012.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime!” Drinkwitz wrote. “You represented what it means to be called a ‘coach.’ I know in this next chapter [Malzahn] will continue to ‘use your influence in a positive way … See you soon & I’ll have the coffee ready!”
