The Arkansas Razorbacks are going to have an entirely different look this basketball season. Gone is Mike Anderson and in his place is former Nevada coach Eric Musselman.
Musselman has already added four transfer players to the roster and continues to work to form his first Arkansas squad.
This week, he said he feels good about the offseason work his team has done so far, saying the new players and returning players have all bought in (via 247Sports):
โWeโve had a good offseason so far,โ Musselman said on the SEC Teleconference Thursday. โObviously, as a new coach, there is always an adjustment period trying to get to know the players, re-recruiting your own roster, as well as trying to form a staff. We are going in the right direction.ย The players have been working extremely hard and have great buy in, so far.โ
As for the large number of transfers — a tactic Musselman also employed at Nevada — he says that’s simply the way college basketball works these days:
โI think that when you look at the landscape of college athletics right now, I havenโt been in college athletics for 30 years, Iโve been here a relatively short time compared to other coaches across this league,โ Musselman said. โIn my short time frame, the transfers have grown and grown and grown. A transfer comes with experience, and you are able to look over his body of work. A DI transfer, you have some sort of body of work to build off when you evaluate them on film. So, yes, they are part of our recruiting philosophy. It was really successful for us in Nevada. We feel like the transfers weโve added right now are going to help. Itโs the landscape right now, just any field, business, that you are dealing with, there is constant change. It evolves. Right now, the transfers, whether its football or basketball, is a big part of the landscape.โ
Will Musselman’s strategy lead to more wins for the Razorbacks? We’ll find out starting this fall.
