ESPN analyst names Alabama QB as college football’s ‘most important’ player

As the college football offseason draws to a close, all eyes are on the quarterback battle in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The Crimson Tide are set to choose between former 5-star recruit Keelon Russell and longtime backup Austin Mack during fall camp. Russell is believed to be the favorite to win the job despite this being just his 2nd season of college football.
As that competition gets going, ESPN’s Bill Connelly is projecting Russell as college football’s “most important” player. He made that case in a new story for ESPN on Tuesday morning, saying Russell has the upside to carry Alabama‘s offense to the next level.
Here’s Connelly analysis:
Russell was one of 2025’s top prospects and spent a redshirt year watching everything Ty Simpson had to do to carry the weakest Alabama offense in years to the College Football Playoff. Now he has to do the same with an even less proven skill corps and a brand-new offensive line. Recruiting rankings tell us there’s plenty of raw talent here, and the Bama run game can’t get any worse than it was in 2025. But while Russell hasn’t even officially won the job yet, he might be the only guy with the upside to drive this offense to solid heights. If he’s not awesome, Alabama probably isn’t either.
Alabama’s biggest issue in 2025 was its running game, though its passing offense with Ty Simpson faltered at key points in the season. The Crimson Tide will be hoping for more consistency out their passing game and offensive line in 2026.
Alabama will open the upcoming campaign against East Carolina on Sept. 5.
