The Georgia Bulldogs escaped a loss to the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville by the skin of their teeth on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs have almost certainly not lived up to Kirby Smart’s standard through 3 weeks, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t one of the best teams in the country.

Sunday evening, ESPN’s Bill Connelly ranked the 39 unbeaten teams left in college football. He gave Georgia the No. 6 slot, second-best amongst SEC schools. Connelly doesn’t consider the Bulldogs to be an absolute juggernaut anymore, but he’s hesitant to doubt them:

In their past three wins against power-conference opponents, Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs have had to go to overtime each time. Is that sustainable? No. Has Georgia shown signs of slippage over the past two seasons? Absolutely. Do I ever feel particularly good picking against them? Absolutely not.

Texas A&M (No. 4) is the only SEC squad ahead of Georgia in Connelly’s rankings. The Aggies defeated Notre Dame 41-40 on the road in thrilling fashion Saturday night to remain unbeaten. Oregon, Ohio State and Penn State are Connelly’s top 3 teams; Miami (FL) rounds out his top 5.

The Bulldogs will have plenty of chances to prove they’re one of the nation’s best throughout their regular season slate. Georgia hosts Ole Miss, Texas and Georgia Tech during the back half of their schedule.

Before that, they host Alabama on Sept. 27. Kickoff for that showdown is set for 7:30 p.m. E.T. on ABC.
