College GameDay‘s Week 1 show at LSU was a smash hit across the country. ESPN recently announced the ratings for the season opener of the show and it drew 2.8 million average viewers, making it the third most-watched regular-season show ever and second-best for an opening weekend.
Additionally, the last hour of the program hit 3.5 million viewers. This is the 40th season of the show and last week was the milestone 500th road episode of the Saturday morning staple.
As for the game later that night, LSU routed Clemson 51-10.
LSU has hosted College GameDay 15 times and will be the venue again for its Week 3 matchup vs. SEC rival Ole Miss, whom Lane Kiffin previously coached prior to heading to Baton Rouge. The only schools to host College GameDay more than LSU are Ohio State, Alabama, and Michigan.
LSU is 3-3 in its last 6 games when being featured as the College GameDay site. LSU’s first appearance as a College GameDay host came on Nov. 9, 1996 and a subsequent 26-0 shutout loss vs. visiting Alabama.
For Week 2, College GameDay will be in Austin for the showdown between No. 1 Ohio State and No. 4 Texas.
