No more fifth-year quarterbacks?

As the news of Kenny Hillโ€™s transfer from Texas A&M came out, I canโ€™t help but think about the end of seeing fifth-year seniors.

We saw a few this past season with Blake Sims, Dylan Thompson, and Hutson Mason, but I donโ€™t think we will be seeing many in the future. These kids want to play, and want to play immediately.

I remember hearing all the pitches from coaches about getting early playing time and โ€œwe arenโ€™t recruiting any other quarterback this year.โ€

I may have made some stupid decisions in my career, but I’m not an idiot. I knew that maybe they didnโ€™t recruit any other quarterback my same year, but they had two guys from the year before and threeย quarterbacks lined up the next year.

(Iโ€™m not complaining at all. I understand recruiting and that you have to keep getting quality players to your school or youโ€™re going to have down years.)

Back to my point, since all these high school kids are getting four- and five-star rankings and are fed enoughย to make their heads explode, they donโ€™t want to stick around at a program and work hard for their starting spot. Again, Iโ€™m not talking about every single incoming quarterback, Iโ€™m just saying in general.

When a young quarterback is beaten out, as Hill got beaten out by Allen with the Aggies, he thought he wasnโ€™t ever going to play or start again, so he asked for a transfer. With the addition of Kyler Murray, a five-star that hasnโ€™t lost a game in high school, Hill saw his chances dwindle.

I want to clarify that I am not bashing Hill or any quarterback that seeks a transfer, I am simply stating my opinion that I donโ€™t think we are going to see many fifth-year senior quarterbacks in the future. I think Hill will be very successful wherever he transfersย and I wish him luck.
