Auburn pulled off one of the biggest flips of the 2024 recruiting cycle over this past weekend. Five-star Foley (Ala.) High wide receiver Perry Thompson left Alabama’s class and committed to Hugh Freeze and the Tigers.
Thompson, a 6-foot-3 receiver ranked as the No. 32 overall recruit in the cycle, gave his verbal commitment to the Crimson Tide in June 2022. The previous Auburn staff didn’t offer him. Freeze and Co. got to work in January and changed everything.
At a media event on Monday, Thompson explained why he ultimately left Alabama’s class for Auburn.
“I know he (Nick Saban) specializes in DBs and my main position is receiver, and I know Hugh Freeze got a background of developing receivers at a higher level,” Thompson said, per AL.com’s Ben Thomas.

Saban has coached a wide receiver that won the Heisman Trophy. Three of his receivers have won Biletnikoff awards. Alabama has also had six first-round NFL Draft picks at receiver since 2018.
Thompson clearly has a ton of faith in Freeze.
Derek Peterson does a bit of everything, not unlike Taysom Hill. He has covered Oklahoma, Nebraska, the Pac-12, and now delivers CFB-wide content.
