Florida fans compare Jon Sumrall to Billy Napier amid blowout loss to South Carolina
Florida fans can be harsh, demanding, unrelenting.
On a forgettable Saturday at The Swamp, Gators fans were all 3 of those — and more. Because after a September to remember, when Jon Sumrall exploded out of the gate in Year 1 in Gainesville, leading UF to a 4-0 start, it’s been an October to forget so far.
Last week’s blowout loss at Mizzou was one thing. The Tigers were ranked and at home in Columbia, where Florida has struggled. So, the 45-17 defeat didn’t sting the way Saturday’s did, as the other SEC team that calls Columbia home came to Gainesville and put a whooping on the Gators.
Struggling South Carolina hadn’t won an SEC game yet this season under embattled head coach Shane Beamer, but that quickly changed in Week 6 as the Gamecocks took it to Florida in a 38-19 rout that made Sumrall suddenly the embattled head coach on the field.
In fact, during the embarrassing home loss, many on social media were comparing Sumrall to the dreaded Billy Napier, who was fired last season after going 22-23 overall after taking over in 2022 to go with a 12-16 mark in the SEC.
For Sumrall, he’s just 4-2 in his short time at UF and now 2-2 in the SEC, but it’s what have you done for me lately in Gainesville, like most places, and lately Florida has been terrible. Sumrall heard the cat calls plenty from those demanding fans.
The social media reaction to Florida’s flop at The Swamp was intense, and here is just a sampling of what was written while the Gators were going down to defeat:
Florida has gone from September thrill to October chill in a few games’ time. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about how many wins the Gators can pile up in 2026 after this sudden 2-game losing streak that followed a 4-0 start:
