Apparently unsatisfied with making headlines by hiring a new head football coach, Florida opted to enter itself into the spotlight again by making another blockbuster move Sunday.
The Gators announced the hiring of former Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall in the morning, and just hours later, On3’s Pete Nakos reported the program revealed that former Jacksonville Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell will take on the same role in Gainesville.
Caldwell currently works as an executive in the Philadelphia Eagles front office, which has ironically seen him work alongside Florida graduate Howie Roseman, the club’s General Manager.
Caldwell joins Sumrall in ushering in a new era of Florida football.
The 51-year-old has spent his entire career in the NFL, first working as a scouting assistant with the Carolina Panthers from 1996-1997. Caldwell then took on various scouting/personnel roles with the Indianapolis Colts and Atlanta Falcons before beginning an eight-year run as Jacksonville’s GM in 2013.
The Buffalo native was hired as a personnel executive for Philadelphia in 2021 and has been there since.
Caldwell does also have playing experience, as he suited up as a linebacker for John Carroll University. He also owns a pair of Super Bowl Rings, one from Super Bowl XLI with the Colts and the other from Super Bowl LIX with the Eagles.
