The Florida State Seminoles have made the decision to fire Mike Norvell after 6 and a half seasons in Tallahassee. Florida State fell to Clemson on Saturday night to drop to 3-5 on the year.
Norvell has been at Florida State since the start of the 2020 season and led the Seminoles to a 13-1 finish in 2023 following a perfect regular season. The Seminoles were infamously snubbed from the 4-team Playoff and have been a disaster ever since — FSU won just 2 games in 2024 and 5 in 2025 before its latest woeful start in 2026.
Norvell reportedly told the Seminoles of the decision Sunday morning. Florida State will owe the fired coach $50.3 million after he was extended in 2023, a contract which was set to run through the 2029 season.
According to Yahoo! Sports’ Ross Dellenger, Director of scouting Rick Stockstill will serve as Florida State’s interim coach.
Here’s FSU president Richard McCullough’s statement on the news:
“We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program,” McCullough said via release on Sunday. “We thanks Mike Norvell for his commitment and service to Florida State and wish him and his family the very best. We understand the deep passion of Seminole fans and share their high expectations for this program. We are confident in Rick Stockstill’s ability to provide steady leadership during this transition. We will conduct a thorough national search for the program’s next leader, someone who embraces Florida State’s tradition of championship athletics and our standard of excellence.”
