Mike Norvell will reportedly return as Florida State’s head football coach for the 2026 college football season. College football insider Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports broke the news Sunday afternoon shortly before the program’s official announcement.
“FSU Board of Trustees Chairman Peter Collins, Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford, and I are in complete agreement that changes are needed for our program to improve,” FSU President Dr. Richard McCullough said in a released statement. “Coach Norvell embraces our support in that process and agrees that success must be achieved. He continues to demonstrate an unwavering belief in this program’s future, and so do we. This decision reflects a unified commitment to competing in the rapidly evolving landscape of college football, while maintaining continuity within the program.”
Norvell has had an up-and-down tenure as FSU’s head coach. The 2026 campaign will be his 7th season leading the Seminoles.
Year 6 for Norvell started well, as the Noles shocked the college football world with a Week 1 upset of Alabama. Florida State, though, has struggled the rest of the year.
FSU has a 5-6 record entering Rivalry Week. The Seminoles will need a victory at 3-8 Florida to get a 6th win for bowl eligibility. Florida State finished with a 2-6 mark in ACC play, dropping all 4 conference road games.
Norvell has a 38-33 record leading the FSU football program. In 2022 and ’23, Florida State went 23-4 under Norvell, nearly making the College Football Playoff two years ago. Outside of those seasons, however, Norvell is just 15-19. Last year’s team posted a 2-10 record.
