Former Alabama QB Dylan Lonergan will lead the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in 2026.
Rutgers named Lonergan its starting quarterback on Monday. The two-time transfer had been competing with third-year quarterback AJ Surace for the starting job.

Lonergan is entering Year 4 of his college football career. The Snellville, Georgia native began his career at Alabama and played at Boston College.
Out of Brookwood High School, Lonergan picked up 26 scholarship offers. He was rated 4-stars, the No. 13 quarterback, No. 13 player in the state of Georgia and No. 160 prospect overall on the 247Sports Composite. Lonergan signed with Alabama over South Carolina, Stanford and others.
Lonergan saw limited action at Alabama. He appeared in 3 games for the Crimson Tide over the 2023 and ’24 seasons. Ahead of the 2025 season, Lonergan transferred to Boston College, reuniting with Bill O’Brien, who recruited the QB to Alabama as an assistant on Nick Saban‘s staff.
At Boston College, Lonergan played in 10 games, making 9 starts. He completed 66.9% of his passes for 2,025 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Rutgers opens the 2026 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 against UMass.
