Garrett Nussmeier’s final taste of college football was a good one, as the former LSU quarterback earned Senior Bowl MVP honors as part of the American team’s 17-9 victory over the National squad in Mobile.
Nussmeier was 5-of-8 passing for 57 yards with an interception and also rushed once for 3 yards and a touchdown. He earned positive reviews throughout the week of practice in Mobile as well.
Nussmeier was one of three quarterbacks who saw action on the American roster, with Illinois product Luke Altmyer and Arkansas’ Taylen Green also seeing time under center.
Former Vanderbilt standout Diego Pavia was arguably the game’s best quarterback, albeit in a losing effort. Pavia completed 10 of 13 pass attempts for 78 yards for the National squad. But he totaled minus-12 yards on four carries (two of which were American sacks).
Nussmeier’s 3-yard scoring scamper was a part of a 14-point first-quarter burst for the American team. Oklahoma’s Jaydn Ott also scored on a 5-yard TD carry later in the quarter. BYU’s Will Ferrin booted a 40-yard field goal to make it 17-0 late in the first half.
Iowa’s Drew Stevens got the National squad on the board with a 50-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter and FIU product Kejon Owens added a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 1:30 remaining.
