A former LSU quarterback is getting a shot as a starter. Kennesaw State is going with Rickie Collins for its season opener vs. visiting West Georgia on Sept. 3, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
The 6-foot-2, 222-pound junior most recently played last season at Syracuse after spending his first 2 seasons at LSU. Collins played in more games for Syracuse last season (7) than altogether at LSU (4). However, the Baton Rouge native passed for 1,042 yards with 6 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during an uneven season for the Orange.
Overall, Collins has amassed 1,080 yards with a 103.5 passer rating during his college career. Collins was regarded by the 247Sports Transfer Rankings as the No. 132 quarterback in the portal. Collins was a district MVP during his junior season of high school in which he tallied 1,930 yards and 16 touchdowns through the air.
Kennesaw State is coming off a 10-4 season as Conference USA champions in Jerry Mack’s first season at the helm. It was the first winning season for the Owls since going 11-2 under Brian Bohannon in their final year in the Big South Conference.
Kennesaw State vs. West Georgia is set for 7:00 p.m. ET and will stream on ESPN+.
