John Emery is the former LSU running back whose once-promising career has been derailed by injuries. However, he is going to get a 7th season of college football this fall, and Emery reportedly has his new destination lined up after leaving Baton Rouge.

According to various reports from Monday, including Chris Hummer with 247 Sports, Emery has signed with UTSA for the 2025 season. Though not a Power 4 program, the Roadrunners have been a bowl-eligible program in all 5 seasons under head coach Jeff Traylor.

UTSA won 32 games across the 2021-23 seasons and went 7-6 with a Myrtle Beach Bowl win over Coastal Carolina in 2024.

Emery originally joined the Tigers as a 5-star prospect and 13th overall prospect in the country for the 2019 recruiting class, according to the 247 Sports Composite. Unfortunately, he missed the entirety of the 2021 college football season and has just 8 total appearances since the start of the 2023 campaign.

Last season, Emery was primed to play a key role for Brian Kelly and the Tigers, but sustained a season-ending injury in the opener. During the offseason, his outlook for the 2025 season became a bit complicated.

At one point, Emery announced he was returning to college football for a 7th season with the original expectation that he might be back with the Tigers. However, Kelly quickly put that talk to a halt, saying at a press conference that LSU was “set where we are at” for the RB position in 2025.

Now, Emery will get that final 7th season elsewhere as he tries to complete a full season of football.
