Former Ole Miss running back Matt Jones has reportedly decided on his next destination.
The RB entered the transfer portal back in December and will reportedly stay in Mississippi and transfer to Southern Miss. Jones rushed for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Rebels in 2024.
Overall, Jones played in 23 games with the Rebels in 3 seasons. Jones ends his time in Oxford having rushed for 308 yards and 6 TDs while catching 4 passes for 12 yards.
Before college, Jones starred for Jackson Prep High School in Flowood, MS. The speedy back did not have a star-rating and chose to walk-on at Ole Miss over scholarship offers from Arkansas State, New Mexico, and Louisiana-Monroe. Jones managed to stick around as a depth option for 3 seasons at Ole Miss, which is an impressive feat.
Jones’ best career game came in Week 1 of the 2024 season against Furman. In that game, Jones turned 3 carries into 68 yards and 2 TDs.
Now, Jones will join a new-look Southern Miss team headed by former Marshall head coach Charles Huff. The Golden Eagles have added a whopping 34 players, including Jones, via the portal. Many of these players followed Huff to Hattiesburg from Marshall.
The Rebels, meanwhile, have now seen 17 players leave in the portal. Jones is the 2nd running back to leave, joining Rashad Amos who committed to Memphis back in December. In response, the Rebels have added 21 players, including RBs Kewan Lacy and Jordon Simmons.
