Former Texas A&M QB Miles O’Neill is surging in UNC quarterback competition, per report

In need of a breakthrough season in Chapel Hill, Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels’ fate may be directly determined by who’s taking snaps under center this fall.
Many believed that Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr., with his plethora of experience and fairly productive background, would assume the reins of Bobby Petrino’s offense, but an ACL injury suffered last season caused him to miss spring ball.
Thus, younger players were able to take advantage of more opportunities, and a former SEC signal-caller may be truly pushing Edwards for the top spot.
Texas A&M transfer Miles O’Neill, a sophomore out of Marblehead, Massachusetts, is gaining ground in the quarterback competition according to reports from TarHeel247.
“Sources are insistent that UNC’s quarterback competition is far from over, especially given how O’Neill has performed so far,” TarHeels247’s Grant Hughes wrote.

The former 4-star recruit played sparingly for the Aggies across two seasons, accounting for 171 passing yards, 2 touchdowns and a pair of interceptions during his time on the field.
But now, O’Neill appears to have a strong shot at running Belichick’s offense, in hopes that he can spark a pedestrian unit from last year.
The decision between O’Neill, Edwards and others will have to be made soon, because North Carolina opens its 2026 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 29 in Dublin, Ireland, against TCU.
