Former Tennessee baseball flamethrower Ben Joyce made his return to the Volunteer State Tuesday after being drafted 89th overall by the Los Angeles Angels.
Joyce regularly threw over 100 miles per hour for the Vols in 2022, touching as high as 105.5 on the radar gun at one point during the season.
The Angels’ Double-A affiliate Rocket City Trash Pandas (yes) faced the Tennessee Smokies Tuesday afternoon, taking Joyce along with them. Smokies Stadium resides in Kodak, just about 30 minutes east of the University of Tennessee campus.

The Trash Pandas went on to beat the Smokies 16-7, thanks in part to Joyce’s efforts in the bottom of the seventh. The Volunteer fireman threw a scoreless inning with one strikeout and one hit allowed across 14 total pitches.
