Georgia coach Kirby Smart has an incredible staff, and he consistently sees his assistants interview for and get head coaching jobs at other schools across the country.

Following NC State’s decision to fire Dave Doeren on Saturday, ESPN published a list of names that could get serious interest for the job, and Bulldogs defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann was among those listed.

Here’s reporting from ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Max Olson and Eli Lederman about Schumann:

Kirby Smart’s longtime protรฉgรฉ seems ready to lead his own program, and would not leave a great situation at Georgia for just any opportunity. Schumann was a serious candidate for the vacancy at nearby North Carolina in 2024 before Bill Belichick emerged. Schumann is just 36 but has been with Smart for the past decade at Georgia, after six years as a student assistant/graduate assistant for Nick Saban at Alabama. Schumann grew up in Georgia and attended high school in Texas. Schumann has been affiliated with six national championship teams.

Schumann has been at Georgia since 2016 when he started as the inside linebackers coach. In 2019, he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator, and then in 2023 was named the defensive coordinator.

There figures to be more discussion about the NC State job moving forward, and this is also just the start of the coaching carousel as there will be many other jobs opening up over the next couple of months.

For now, Schumann is locked in helping the Bulldogs get back to the College Football Playoff, but it is only a matter of time before he takes the next step and becomes a head coach.
