Georgia cornerback Shattle Fenteng is required to undergo shoulder surgery that will put him on the shelf for the remainder of the season.
The JUCO transfer injured his left shoulder while diving for a ball during a drill the second week of preseason camp last month. He worked his way back and played two special teams plays in the Bulldogs’ Aug. 30 opener against Clemson. He has not played since, thus the decision to move ahead with the procedure.
“It’ll be doubtful that he’ll play again this season,” Richt said Wednesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I’m pretty sure he’s going to require some surgery on his shoulder. It just never got better.”
According to media reports, Fenteng will apply for and should be granted a medical redshirt. He’ll have two more seasons of eligibility with Georgia.
Fenteng was expected to be a shut-down corner opposite senior Damian Swann.
“He’s a guy who’s tall, we use the term long because he has long arms,” Richt said. “He’s a good athlete. He’d have been a guy we thought as he learned what to do would be able to matchup against some bigger guys and it just didn’t work out for him this year.”
With Fenteng out, it was junior Devin Bowman who emerged as the guy at boundary corner, but recently, redshirt freshman Aaron Davis moved to that position and has been getting snaps with the No. 1 defense.
