The Georgia Bulldogs announced Friday that they have extended the contract of defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt by one year. Pruitt’s salary will increase from $850,000 to $1.3 million.

The new dealย makes him the third highest-paid assistant coach in college football and the second highest in the SEC behind Alabama’s Kirby Smart.

โ€œOur defense has performed overall at a very high level this season and much of it is due to Jeremyโ€™s leadership,โ€ Richt said in a statement. โ€œItโ€™s important that we solidify his tenure at Georgia and continue to build our defense in all areas including recruiting, coaching and player development.โ€

The Bulldogs ranked No. 18 overall in total defense, No. 5 in passing defense and No. 61 in rushing defense.

Pruitt joined Georgia’s staff in 2014 after guiding FSU’s defense to a BCS Championship in 2013. The coordinator began his coaching career as an assistant to Nick Saban in 2007 and served as the team’s defensive backs coach from 2010-12.
