In need of some depth at the quarterback position for 2019, Georgia coach Kirby Smart turned to a familiar face: Stetson Bennett.
The former walk-on Bulldogs quarterback left after the spring to transfer to the JUCO ranks. Now, after one season at Jones County Community College in Mississippi (1,840 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, 14 interceptions; 148 yards rushing, 4 touchdowns), Bennett is returning to the Bulldogs as a scholarship quarterback.
Bulldogs players are thrilled that Bennett is coming back to Athens. As a scout team quarterback, Bennett became something of a legend. He did such a good job imitating former Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield for last season’s Rose Bowl game that some players believe he’s better than the real thing.
Tight end Charlie Woerner spoke to reporters after practice Friday and recalled what his teammates had said about Bennett.
โThey were saying heโs better than Baker (Mayfield) when we were practicing for Oklahoma,โ Woerner told Anthony Dasher of Rivals. โThey talked about how he gave them a good look and how hard he was to defend.โ
Bennett is listed as a pro-style quarterback, but DE Jonathan Ledbetter remembered him as being dangerously mobile.
โI hated playing against him. I got juked. He almost broke my ankles,โ Ledbetter said. โHeโs an undersized guy but he will make everything happen. I love him, Iโm glad heโs coming back.โ
