Georgia Tech wanted a statement win early in the season, and the Yellow Jackets got just that on Saturday when Aidan Birr knocked in a 55-yard field goal as time expired to give the team a 24-21 victory over No. 12 Clemson.

Coach Brett Key and his program have been big-game winners before, and they picked up another upset on Saturday. The fans stormed the field to celebrate, tearing down the field goalposts in the process. The fun didn’t end there, though. Fans delivered the goalpost straight to the door of the school’s president, Ángel Cabrera, dumping it in the pool outside his mansion.

If you are going to celebrate, there isn’t a more legendary place than the school president’s pool. Since the students stormed the field, though, Georgia Tech will also be fined $50,000 by the ACC.

For the Yellow Jackets, that fine is something that the program will pay with a smile on its face. Key played his college football at Georgia Tech, and firmly has his alma mater as a legitimate contender in the ACC.

Quarterback Haynes King is the focal point of this offense, and he delivered in a big way on Saturday. He was 20-of-28 for 211 yards, but it was on the ground where he is at his best. He rushed the ball another 25 times for 103 yards and a touchdown.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets figure to be ranked in the Top 25 next week, and have a schedule that sets up favorably in the ACC. They don’t have to play Florida State or Miami, and their toughest game the rest of the way is the regular-season finale against Georgia.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action next week at home against Temple.
