Greg McElroy evaluates Texas’ monster comeback win over Ohio State

Greg McElroy is no stranger to big games and big wins as a former quarterback at Alabama.
On Sunday, on his Always College Football podcast, McElroy broke down what could turn out to be the game of the year in college football before it’s all over. It was then-No. 4 Texas outlasting then-No. 1 Ohio State, 24-23, using a 21-point 4th quarter led, of course, by quarterback Arch Manning as the Longhorns erased a 23-3 deficit going into the final 15 minutes.
How did Manning and the Horns do it? McElroy had some thoughts on the day after the primetime matchup in Austin that lived up to its billing.
“AP No. 1’s are 197-0 when holding a 20-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Well, guess what? They are now 197-1, because Texas scored 21 unanswered (points) in the final 15 minutes,” McElroy said. “And the strangest part is that it wasn’t like it was crazy fireworks. It was steady, and Arch Manning finished with less than 200 passing yards. What changed is that they stopped missing throws, they started to connect. That was a huge part of it.”
McElroy believes it was also all about Texas correcting what plagued it earlier in the game.
“They had so many missed opportunities early, they started to get things going,” McElroy said. “I mean, Arch finished by completing 11 of his final 15 (passes). And the entire story is this — a guy that was throwing decent throws at times in the first quarter, first half, first three quarters, they started to finally connect after three quarters of play.”
