The biggest matchup from Week 3’s jam-packed slate of SEC action was the Game of the Year-worthy clash between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Tennessee Volunteers. The Dawgs walked into a packed-out Neyland Stadium, and walked away with an iconic come-from-behind 44-41 win over their hated in-conference rivals, a win that marked their ninth-straight victory over the Vols.

Losing in such a gut-wrenching manner was naturally a massive blow for both the Vols and their fans, but they also showed that they are capable of hanging with the best college football has to offer. UGA won and moved up to No. 5 in the AP Top 25. AP voters did not feel the need to drop the Vols in the loss. Greg McElroy was similarly impressed by the Vols in a losing effort.

“Tennessee’s performance makes me feel better about them going forward,” McElory said. “There was a question mark with Tennessee this year, and it was ‘How would the quarterback be?’ I think Joey Aguilar is pretty dang good. I think that the wider receiver group is pretty sporty. We also now know that there aren’t many teams that will go toe-to-toe with Georgia from a physicality standpoint. Guess what? Tennessee just did… The offense is legit, and it’s going to give them an opportunity to play with, and execute against everybody the play.”

It’s hard to argue with McElroy’s arguments here, and the tape shows that the Vols can hang with the best college football has to offer. If they can find that killer instinct moving forward, then this could end up being a very special season in Knoxville.
