Greg McElroy makes pick in Mississippi State-Arizona State game, hints at betting line
In Greg McElroy’s opinion, he hosts “the best preview show in college football” via the Always College Football podcast. It’s no surprise, then, that he dove into one of the Week 2 slates more compelling under-the-radar matchups: No. 12 Arizona State at Mississippi State. The Sun Devils are widely considered a touchdown favorite in Starkville.
The Sun Devils and Bulldogs faced off for the first time ever in 2024. Arizona State emerged victorious, 30-23, at home in Mountain America Stadium. The location for this meeting has changed, but McElroy sees the winner remaining the same.
“I will take Arizona State in this game, but it will be close,” McElroy said. “If you read between the lines there — you’re thinking about maybe placing a wager or something — I’ll take Arizona State. But it’ll be close in what should be a good one there in Starkville.”

McElroy believes Mississippi State will be competitive because of the problems their fans can create for opponents. The rowdy nature of the Bulldog crowd, particularly when things are going good, is well-known. The Sun Devils can try to replicate the experience all they want, but as McElroy can attest, it’s a one-of-one encounter.
“[Arizona State is] going into one of the more hostile environments in college football with Davis Wade Stadium. The constant clang of the cowbell, the pre-snap challenges, the procedural challenges of playing in that environment are real,” McElroy said. “Take it from me, I’ve played there. That place is a beast to communicate.”
If the Sun Devils struggle to adapt, it’s possible the Bulldogs can pull off the upset. Arizona State, though, is the more talented team. If quarterback Sam Leavitt protects the football and handles the raucous crowd, his Sun Devils should be well-positioned to win. Kickoff for the game is 7:30 p.m. E.T. on ESPN2.
