Greg Sankey and the SEC made some of the biggest headlines of the offseason, adding Texas and Oklahoma to the conference (at some point within the next few years).

One question that has persisted after the news broke is about who reached out to whom and when did it happen?

On Wednesday, the SEC commissioner joined 1010 XL on 92.5 FM with Matt Hayes to discuss a number of topics. When Hayes asked about the timeline of the first Texas and Oklahoma contact, Sankey said definitively that the 2 schools reached out to the SEC:

“Those 2 universities reached out to us,” he said. “Things accelerated during SEC Media Days. … Pretty clearly, that was the 2 universities reaching out. … These were 2 universities thinking about their future and reaching out to the Southeastern Conference.”

Another pressing issue? When those 2 schools join the SEC, how many conference games will be played per season? Sankey was asked if 9 or 10 conference games was possible, but he didn’t give a definite answer:

“The more we can move our teams through our campuses … that’s the focus,” he said. “Is that a specific set of games? No. We’re going to look at the alternatives. … The challenge has been let’s look at the big picture and clear up that objective.”

Basically, nothing has been decided yet. We’ll see what happens with the conference schedule moving forward though.
