Auburn’s defense is transitioning from facing a primarily run-based attack at Texas A&M, to a pass-heavy attack from the Air Raid at Mississippi State.

A coach with an offensive background himself, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn spoke about the unique offense from Mike Leach.

“It’s pretty unique compared to the teams we’ve seen this year,” Malzahn said. “Very different, kind of open approach, throw to open up the run. Like I said, I’m hoping that that off week that we had when the game got canceled, I’m hoping that preparation really helps us too, just getting a good footing on everything with our plan. But they present challenges, there’s no doubt. They’ve been protecting the football and I think that’s been a big factor.”

Malzahn is aware that Mississippi State had an off week leading into this game, but Auburn had one before the originally scheduled game earlier this season.

“We had a few practices to at least get a foundation of what they do, so hopefully that’ll help us,” Malzahn said.

Malzahn was asked about rotating more players into the back seven on defense. The coach said playing 10 SEC games has limited Auburn’s ability to play more players.

“They throw it and they throw it and they throw it and you need as many DBs or fresh DBs as you can get,” Malzahn said.
