The contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the pretenders a month into the college football season.
For college football guru Phil Steele, that means placing a higher value on yards and points against games already played on the schedule. Steele’s ranking also contrasts against more popular and mainstream polls such as the coaches poll and Associated Press poll, which have had Clemson, Alabama and Georgia among the top three in recent weeks.
Wisconson, which beat Michigan 35-14 on Saturday, was not ranked in the top 10 of other major polls, however Steele has the Badgers atop his ranking with 123.9, ahead of Big Ten rival Ohio State. Wisconsin moved to No. 8 in the AP poll.
Alabama is the top SEC team, according to Steele, however it’s just third on the list. Auburn and LSU follow at No. 6 and No. 7.
While Georgia had played a soft schedule ahead of Saturday’s win over Notre Dame, Steele has the Bulldogs ranked fourth in the SEC, which is another item not seen elsewhere. Steele must believe the SEC West is that much ahead of the East.
Here are Steele’s current rankings:
My average game grades only take into account yards and points and who a team has played this year.

7. LSU 110.5
