The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns will meet once again inside the Cotton Bowl for 2025’s iteration of the Red River Rivalry.

After 4 straight Oklahoma wins to end the 2010s, the Longhorns are back on track in this legendary all-time series. Texas has won 2 of the last 3, but stumbles into Dallas this season after already suffering losses to Ohio State and Florida. Their CFP hopes aren’t the highest they’ve been in recent years, but salvaging a Playoff run absolutely has to start Saturday in Dallas.

Oklahoma, on the other hand, is a perfect 5-0 to start the season and will likely return star quarterback John Mateer from injury. Can the Sooners hop to 6-0 or will Texas right the ship?

The Sooners have been one of the best teams in football this season, and it’s all thanks to a vicious defense paired with a star quarterback. It’s hard to go wrong with that combination in the college game, after all.

The quarterback situation defines a lot of the dialogue surrounding both these teams entering Week 7. Mateer, who transferred in from Washinton State, has been dominant on the ground and through the air: He’s thrown for 1,215 yards and 6 touchdowns with 3 interceptions while rushing for 190 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Sooners QB has been at the top of Heisman lists pretty much since beating Michigan in Week 2.

While Arch Manning has plenty of talent as well, he doesn’t quite have the experience. The Texas quarterback struggled in both of his previous games against decent competition (Ohio State, Florida) and will simply have to be better for the Longhorns to pull off this win over their rival — especially considering Oklahoma’s top-tier defensive effort so far this season.

Don’t count the Longhorns out yet, though. Texas’s defense is a real threat once again, and it’s advisable to throw history entirely out the window when it comes to rivalry matchups.

We’re in for a fun one, folks.
