Auburn earned its first SEC victory of the season on Saturday in large part because of kicker Alex McPherson. The junior converted all 6 of his field goals in the 33-24 win against host Arkansas.
It was quite the comeback performance for McPherson after he missed a field goal in overtime during Auburn’s loss last weekend vs. Missouri. Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze had an emotional response when discussing McPherson’s phenomenal game.
“He’s the first 1 in my office Monday to say ‘I’m sorry. Coach I lost that game for you.’ I said ‘Dude I believe in you. You’ll make the next one.'” Freeze said while fighting back tears. “Then he ties the school record today with 6, so what a redemption story that is. I’m thrilled for him.”
McPherson had converted field goals of 36, 23, 43, 26, 47 and 37 yards, with the final 3 in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
The 5-foot-9 McPherson is in his fourth season at Auburn. The Alabama native is the brother of Evan McPherson, who is currently the placekicker for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Next up for Auburn is a home contest against Kentucky on Nov. 1. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (SEC Network).
