Miami’s defense got a boost on Sunday when the Hurricanes released a statement about the status of Avantae Williams ahead of their season opener this week against Alabama.

Williams, who missed the 2020 season because of an unspecified medical issues but was cleared to resume football activities this spring, was dismissed about a month ago because of a series of criminal charges. However, the Hurricanes announced that he’s reinstated after the charges were dropped, the Miami Herald reported.

โ€œWith the State of Florida dropping criminal charges against Avantae Williams, the University of Miami Department of Athletics has decided to reinstate him to the football program,โ€™โ€™ UM Athletics stated. โ€Despite the charges being dropped, we take all allegations of domestic violence very seriously. Therefore, the student-athlete will need to reach specific benchmarks in the area of education, mentorship, and personal development in order to return to competition and remain as a member of the football team.โ€™โ€™

He’s listed as a 6 foot, 198-pound second-year freshman from DeLand, Florida.
