During a press conference on Friday to address the changes to LSU’s athletic department, interim athletic director Verge Ausberry said that the Tigers must make the College Football Playoff “every year in football.”
LSU parted ways with AD Scott Woodward Thursday night following the firing of head coach Brian Kelly. The Tigers have named Ausberry as the interim AD, and in his press conference held Friday morning, he said he will lead the search for the next football coach. Ausberry also added that the Tigers must make the CFP every year and be one of the teams talked about on every network each week.
“LSU has to be in the playoffs every year in football,” Ausberry said. “We have to be talked about on ESPN, every channel. When you’re talking about LSU football, that is the way. This big building here has to be successful if we are going to be successful as an athletic department. It’s the measuring stick we have here.”
Ausberry is in his 24th year of employment with the LSU Athletic Department. He has served as the department’s Executive Deputy Director of Athletics and Executive Director of External Relations since July 2019.
He is also a former middle linebacker for the Tigers. He was a four-year letterwinner and a leading tackler on the defense for 2 years.
The Tigers haven’t made the CFP since winning it in 2019. Following an overhaul of the team this offseason, LSU was expected to contend for the SEC title and a spot in the 12-team CFP this fall. It opened the season as the No. 9 team in the AP poll. Following last Saturday’s loss to Texas A&M, LSU sits at 5-3 on the year.
