Jalen Hurts knows something about transferring to Oklahoma.
During an appearance with the NFL Network, former OU standout Gerald McCoy managed to get in a question about the Sooners. McCoy wanted to know if Hurts had any advice for John Mateer, the Washington State transfer quarterback who will lead Oklahoma in 2025.
“I think, No. 1, is just embracing everything that comes with it,” Hurts said. “It’s a special place to play, a special support system and support group, and so I’m always supporting. And I’ve actually had a conversation with him in his transition, and so I’m always supporting from afar, always watching both schools, and happy I get to pick my poison when I want to.”
Fans surely took note when Hurts worked in “watching both schools” when answering the question about Mateer. Hurts is likely to feel conflicted on Nov. 15 when Mateer and the Sooners travel to Tuscaloosa to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide, his first college team.
Hurts had a memorable transfer season at OU in 2019, completing 69.7% of his passes for career highs of 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also rushed for 21 scores as the Heisman Trophy runner-up.
