James Franklin questions ‘un-American’ flag on Hokies RB for high-fiving Corps of Cadet member

The Virginia Tech Hokies kicked off the James Franklin era in style on Saturday with a dominant 73-3 win over the Virginia Military Institute in Blacksburg.
Franklin had very little to complain about in terms of his team’s performance on the gridiron, but he did have a bone to pick with a referee who threw a flag on Hokies’ running back Marcellous Hawkins Jr. after he high-fived a Corps of Cadets member in the stands after running in his third touchdown of the game.
Franklin blasted the ref’s decision in his post-game interview, saying that it seemed “somewhat un-American” to throw a flag in that situation.
“We got a penalty for high-fiving one of our members of the Corp,” Franklin said. “You know, I’m not a huge fan, and I don’t know why you can’t high-five somewhat in the military. It seems somewhat un-American to me.”

Franklin’s issues with the ref in question’s patriotism aside, the first-year head man for the Hokies had to have been happy with how his new squad performed in their first contest of the season.
If his guys can maintain this level of play moving forward, then the Hokies could end up making some noise in the ACC come December.
