The hyped quarterback showdown between Kamario Taylor and Keelon Russell did not go as many expected on Saturday. As Mississippi State saw its deficit against Alabama swell to blowout levels, the Bulldogs saw their quarterback leave the game early.
Taylor left in the 4th quarter on Saturday before MSU’s 56-23 loss was final. After the game, Bulldogs coach Jeff Lebby was asked for the latest on his starting quarterback. Lebby declined to go into much detail beyond saying Taylor is currently day-to-day. The Bulldogs are off in Week 6 and play LSU in Week 7.
Mississippi State QB Kamario Taylor is day-to-day, per Jeff Lebby. "We'll let the injury report that Wednesday of LSU speak to where we're at."

Lebby raved about Taylor's toughness to give himself a chance to play vs. Alabama. He injured his lower-leg vs. Missouri last week.

It was an up-and-down for Taylor before the injury. He completed a season-low 55.9% of his passes (19-of-34) and threw 2 interceptions, but also had 3 touchdown passes while hitting 258 yards. The TD number makes Taylor the first SEC quarterback to throw 3 or more TDs in 5 straight games since Jayden Daniels did at LSU in 2023, the season that he won the Heisman Trophy.
It’s fortunate for Taylor that Mississippi State gets a bye week to rest and recover before gearing up for another rivalry clash. The Bulldogs play No. 11 LSU on Oct. 17 in Baton Rouge.
