Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M lost a member of the Maroon Goons recently, and the coach announced the move on Tuesday.
Fisher announced that offensive lineman Luke Matthews medically retired after the former 4-star recruit dealt with ongoing injuries throughout his career, including a shoulder injury last season. Matthews is the son of NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews, as well as the younger brother of former Aggies linemen Jake Matthews, Kevin Matthews and Mike Matthews.
The one-time Army All-American Bowl selection was projected at one point to be the team’s center of the future at one point but he was on the shelf for all of the 2020 campaign and didn’t play a down, GigEm247 reported.
The plan was to get him into the lineup for the 2021 season after the Aggies lost four starters from the 2020 team and he worked his way slowly back into a potential playing role, beginning in the spring when he didn’t participate in any of the scrimmages or the spring game. He did participate in the off season program as well as most of the practices and won accolades from his teammates and coaches in the run up to the season. However, injuries struck again in fall camp and he played only in a backup role in the season opener versus Kent State before sitting out the remainder of the year.
