Jimbo Fisher blasts Lane Kiffin for not allowing some assistants to coach Ole Miss in Fiesta Bowl

Former Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher ripped Lane Kiffin for being “selfish” for his decision not to allow some assistants to help Ole Miss in the Fiesta Bowl.

Following Ole Miss’s College Football Playoff quarterfinal win over Georgia, there was uncertainty about how many of the LSU-bound assistants would coach with the Rebels in the semifinal game. Ahead of Thursday’s game, Pete Golding confirmed that Ole Miss is down 2 on-field offensive assistants.

Fisher had the chance to talk about the situation on the ACC Network, and he went off on Kiffin.

“It’s selfish. That’s what it is. It’s stupid,” Fisher said. “He wanted to coach and thought he didn’t get his way, so everybody get on the plane with me, or you don’t have a job. Then he gets down there and takes a PR hit because it looks bad that you really don’t care about the kids. Then he says, ‘Okay, you can go back.’ But here’s where he screwed up: he thought they were going to lose to Georgia and the portal thing would be all over with… Now, he’s got egg on his face because the real Lane came back out.”

There’s no doubt that this situation is unprecedented in college football. Many will blame Kiffin for not letting the assistants stay, but the truth remains that college football has a schedule problem with the transfer portal being open while teams are still playing.

There’s no reason the portal should open before the season ends and create situations we are now seeing unfold in front of our eyes.
