Joe Burrow knows a thing or two about being a big-time player at LSU. He finished with 5,671 passing yards and 60 touchdowns, while leading the Tigers to a national championship in 2019.
During a podcast appearance with Julian Edelman, Burrow was asked who should be on the LSU version of ‘Mount Rushmore’.
Edelman told Burrow he was already up there, so he needed to only pick three. However, Burrow couldn’t keep it to just three people — he added a couple more who he believed were worthy of the honor.
Burrow’s first choice was Billy Cannon, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1959 after finishing third the year before.
Wide receivers had a big presence on Burrow’s list, as Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, and Odell Beckham Jr. all made the cut. Jefferson and Chase were on his team at LSU. During that national championship run, Chase had 84 catches for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns. Jefferson was equally as impressive, as he had 111 catches for 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Beckham was there from 2011-2013, finishing with 143 catches for 2,340 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Defensively, the guy who stood out to Burrow was safety Tyrann Mathieu, who was one of the best playmakers in recent college football history. It was at LSU where he got the nickname ‘The Honey Badger’, as he was a threat any time he touched the football. In 2011, he scored four touchdowns, with two on fumbles and the other two on punt returns.
