Joe Theismann shares blunt advice for Dak Prescott contract situation: ‘You’re not a top-5 quarterback’

The Dallas Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott continue to be at a stalemate when it comes to Prescott’s contract situation.

The former Mississippi State star is looking for more money than the Cowboys are willing to offer, and it is causing some tension between the 2 sides, it seems.

During an appearance on CBS Sports Radio this week, legendary NFL QB Joe Theismann said he’d advice Prescott to take the millions the Cowboys are offering him:

“Dak Prescott’s situation confuses me a bit,” Theismann told JR SportBrief. “If I was advising Dak Prescott, I would say, ‘Take the money. The aggravation to go through, the unknowns if you happen to go through a year, the free agency – yes, they’ve committed a lot of money to Amari [Cooper]. Yes, they’ve committed a lot of money to Zeke. But that’s a lot of money. What are you looking for? Another couple million? You’re never going to see the last year of this contract anyway.’”

Theismann noted that any contract would be life-changing money. Then, he was brutally honest in adding that Prescott isn’t a top-5 quarterback in the NFL:

“What you really concern yourself with is the guarantee that you’re going to get,” he said. “So if he signs a five-year contract at $34 million, that’s $170 million and probably $115-20 of it is guaranteed. What, are you crazy? Are you really, really nuts? Has somebody got into your head and said, ‘It’s worth the risk of disrupting the football team? All the questions, all the pressures?’

“You’re not a top-five quarterback in the National Football League. You’re a good football player. You have the potential to be better, but what have you done?”

Being a top-5 quarterback isn’t necessarily a requirement for a huge contract, though. Prescott wants to make sure he gets what he’s worth. Guys like Kirk Cousins, Matt Stafford and Jared Goff probably weren’t top-5 quarterbacks when they signed massive deals.

We’ll see what the Cowboys want to do moving forward.
