Joey Halzle points to why Josh Heupel is such a great offensive mind

Joey Halzle has worked closely with Josh Heupel for long enough to realize what sets the Tennessee coach apart in terms of his offensive approach.
Halzle, Tennessee’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, said Tuesday that Heupel keeps things simple, and doesn’t typecast himself into a box.
“It sounds contradictory, is one, he doesn’t stray from that, but he always finds ways to innovate with what we do,” Halzle said. “And he knows exactly what his players can and can’t do and designs for them. And then specific to the players, he always asks the question, ‘Does that work for him?’ Come up with a cool play design. All right, ‘Is that the right route for him? Is he good at that, does someone else need to go there, or does the whole thing need to get canned.’ So he makes you think of the actual players and not just the plays.”
Halzle added that Heupel believes if a player isn’t ready to do it, or capable, it doesn’t matter how good the design of a play is to draw up.
Since he had a promotion this offseason, Halzle said his time management is on the front end to lead meetings instead of hearing what the plan is during a meeting. He’s also no longer looking at things through the scope of a quarterback. Is it good for each position around the offense?
